Art Workshop Descriptions
“Meet our Instructors”

Di Di Gadjanski
Date: April 1 – 2
Medium: Acrylic/Mixed Media
Subject: Abstract Florals or landscapes
Cost: $160 (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX or Etransfer)

Didi is a graduate of OCAD and has been a participant in the Toronto art scene for the past 35 years. Her artistic expression has grown into a distinct language of textural effects and colour palette based on her world travels. She is a leader of workshops for arts organizations and corporations with emphasis on experimentation and creativity.

In this workshop we are going to be doing simplified or totally abstract paintings but with a feel of floral or a landscape for an ease of transition for those who do not have previous experience with abstraction. I will be showing techniques to achieve interesting textures quickly and without textural materials, with paint only.

Di Di hopes to put you on a creative track that will show you how to achieve a simplified or abstract image from a photo reference of your choice.  Please limit yourself ahead of the workshop to 10 images of flowers and 10 landscapes. For example if you have florals, fields, coastline, streetscapes etc. It will be a continuation of imaging that you are acquainted with in your previous work and expanding on it. You can also use your sketches.

On Saturday I will work on Yupo paper and on Sunday on canvas. Techniques presented will be surface interchangeable so if you do not want to  work on Yupo you can do it on canvas both days although the effects achieved are quite different on Yupo compared to canvas.

DiDi will gladly help with composition and design and teach that in simple form in order to create a more successful painting.

Valerie Kent
Date: April 15 – 16
Medium: Watercolour for Beginners
Subject: Landscapes
Cost: $160 (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX or Etransfer)

As artists, we adore our own wonderful environments.  We love to paint our own landscapes that surround us for personal, historic, and nostalgic reasons.
We will paint local views together that are distinct and unique. This 2-day watercolour workshop is designed to teach the skills you will need as a watercolour
artist using images that are compelling. That means learning the basics:

  • painting from a photograph,
  • using the watercolour medium,
  • mixing colours,
  • working within a successful composition and
  • nailing the center of interest that will make your art stand out.

Learning to paint, like so many things in life, is a process. First, it means being brave enough to get started. Then it means learning to be kind to yourself as you learn the skills, the techniques, try out tips, learn to look and then to see and it definitely means not judging yourself harshly. Painting is fun. Painting can pull you into that exciting, joyful place where your right brain parties. There will be demonstrations and a step-by-step approach. You will be encouraged to breathe.

Valerie Kent
Date: May 27 – 28
Medium: Acrylic for Beginners/Intermediate
Subject: Landscapes
Cost: $160 (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX or Etransfer)
How does light move through a landscape? What do artists do to create that beautiful sunlit scene? How do you put a three-dimensional image on a two-dimensional surface? When the world is so complex, how do artists simplify it enough to actually be able to translate it into a painting?

We will visit so many elements in a landscape: skies, fields, paths, trees, creeks and other waters, hills and mountains, and what needs to happen to create the illusion of reality. A center of interest is crucial in composition to offer that sense of dynamic organization.
How can you tell if you have a center of interest? After this workshop, you will definitely know the answer to that. How much water should you use to mix acrylic paint? Should you use water at all? Acrylic mediums- what is the purpose of them and when do you use them? There are a lot of additives for acrylic paint: mediums, gels and pastes. Let’s clarify all of this for you.

If you, like me, enjoy this very versatile medium then come and learn by painting Landscapes for a spring weekend in May. The venue is in the middle of a park. There will be demonstrations and lots of one-on-one time. There is a limit of 10 participants in this workshop so please sign up early.

Valerie Kent
Date: June 24 – 25
Medium: Watercolours for Beginners/Intermediate
Subject: Wild Field Flowers
Cost: $160 (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX or Etransfer)

Enjoy a modern and vibrant approach to painting wild field flowers in watercolours. The step-by-step approach guides you through nature’s own floral arrangements creating layers and depth.

We will keep the drawing simple and transition from geometric forms to refining shapes and adding final details to ensure a striking outcome. Basic techniques of flower painting with demonstrations, tips and discussion will be part of the instruction. We will paint daisies, sunflowers, and coneflowers in the field, their natural habitats.

Watercolour materials such as paper, brushes and paints, plus composition, colour mixing and values will be part of the workshop practice and discussions. There is always something new and wonderful when we paint flowers, something that strikes to the heart of what we love in our bright and enticing world of nature.
