The exhibit opens July 29th and continues to September 1st. The opening reception will be held on July 29thh 1:00-4:00 PM. “Father and Son” is an exhibit that exudes emotion, power, and spirit. This new exhibit features indigenous art in the Woodland style that the Morrisseaus always hoped would express their mission as one to dignify and rejuvenate pride with the First Nations communities. Vibrant images by this father and son include: animal images, landscapes, his father and children, tradition, and legends. Norval Morrisseau Biography Excerpts: One of Canada’s most beloved and nationally acclaimed artists, the late Norval Morrisseau, is known as the "Picasso of the North". Since his death almost ten years ago, Norval Morrisseau’s artwork is increasingly difficult to acquire. This exhibit provides a rare opportunity to do so. Norval has long been an iconic figure in the Canadian and international art world creating works depicting the legends of his people, the cultural and political tensions between native Canadian and European traditions, his existential struggles, and his deep spirituality, and mysticism. His style, also known as x-ray painting is characterized by thick black outlines and bright colors and has been described as an interpretation of ancient Anishnaabe spirituality through a contemporary aesthetic, creating a communication between native and non-native cultures. Christian Morrisseau Biography Excerpts: Christian is an accomplished artist. His love of the Woodland style of art was traditionally passed down to him by his father, Norval. Christian spent four months learning and listening to his father's teachings and began painting in May 2002. He wanted to celebrate his gift and keep the Morriseau's family traditions and stories alive. Christian is a devout student of his father’s art yet continues to develop his artistic gifts with intensity, discipline, and passion. This passion and devotion are reflected in the success of his pieces which sell well in many markets and are widely accepted by art lovers. The Gallery on the Lake is proud to feature the works of these renowned and highly collectible First Nations artists.
